7/18/11 A Need for Rest (updated 12/25/11)

The Ten Commandments: The Fourth Command: Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

("Come Unto Me" Carl Heinrich Bloch 1834-90)

Thoughts: Americans have willingly embraced a part of their inheritance while disowning the foundation (and motivation) for what they do.  Americans embrace the Protestant work ethic.  It is the ethic that says work and productivity is good. However, the ethic was founded on the belief that we are created to glorify God with our lives and with our work (not so widely embraced today).  So today, 35% of Americans work on weekdays as well as weekends (http://www.bls.gov/tus/charts/chart11.pdf).  Americans work 30% more than their European counterparts- and this has risen from equal work hours in the 1970s (http://www.forbes.com/2006/05/20/steven-landsburg-labor_cx_sl_06work_0523landsburg.html).
At the same time, Gallup polls indicates that American sleep habits have decreased.  In 1942 84% of Americans slept 7+ hours a night.  Today that is only 56%.  Depression (often a sign of weariness) has risen to epidemic proportions as well.  30% of American women are depressed.  There is a striking rise in depression among children (http://www.upliftprogram.com/depression_stats.html#4).
Americans are more in debt, and so they work to ease themselves out of debt (I owe, I owe so off to work I go).  We know we need self control and restraint but we are unwilling to bite the bullet of stopping ("Sabbath" means stopping).
This is easily seen in the demagoguery of our politicians who loudly indicate that we need to stop going into debt, but are not willing to make enough spending cuts.  It could be argued that while America defeated the idea of Marxist materialism when the USSR fell in 1989, yet it succumbed to the very materialism it defeated- living for work and visible things.  One check against materialism, and slavery to work was a corporate day of rest.  To say that there is no effect of the elimination of a Sabbath in the last generation would be naive.  In the South the practice of keeping a Sabbath kept the pace slower.  In the Western world, the Sabbath was instituted legally by Constantine in 321 when Christianity itself became legal.  Sabbath laws are still in effect in much of Europe (which may account for the 30% difference in work habits since the 1970s).  At the same time, pagers, cell phones, Internet accessibility, email, text messaging, social/business networking keep some from escaping work- even on days off and vacations.  We may easily buy/produce/sell 24/7.  The bigger question is "whether we should?"
Christmas Day is perhaps the last remnant of a true Sabbath in our culture, and even that is being eroded.  It still is amazing that the tail-light to tail-light mall rush is stopped for one day between the last-minute-gift buyers and the returns or after-Christmas-sales.  One Christmas song that is appropriate is (From "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear")- "But you beneath life's crushing load whose forms are bending low; who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow; Look now for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing; and rest beside the weary road and hear the angels sing."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaxB0xEbO0c.  Isaiah said when the Messiah came, he would bring "comfort" (Isa. 40:1).  Jesus said to come to him when we are weary, lacking peace, seeking comfort.  He is the comfort of our soul.  The Sabbath is one gift to us from God that keeps us from being slaves to our work, our earthly focus, or our debt.  Without a social consenus that we need more peace and more break it cannot happen.  But American history is full of weeks (until the 1960s) when we stopped and caught our breath and were renewed to dream, think, worship, and pray.
In a culture busily spinning out of control with materialistic greed and lust for more, perhaps a call to come back to values and the Sabbath should be heard.  In a too-busy world, Jesus calls us to come to Him- when we are weary and heavy laden and He will give us rest to our souls. The Sabbath was not meant to be an inconvenience to us, as much as a break- a holiday for us.  It is a time to catch up on what is most important- our relationship with God, with others, and peace within our own hearts.

Prayer: In a world that has a hard time resting, Lord, help me to find my rest in you.  Give me grace to take one day in seven to honor you.

7/11/11 The Lord's Day

The Ten Commandments devotional: Fourth Command- Remember the Sabbath Day

12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. (Deuteronomy 5:12-15)

(Slaves in Egypt)

Thoughts: This command is the longest of the Ten Commandments. It is the last of the God-centered commands.  The word "Sabbath" means rest or stop.  There are several parts to this wonderful command.
1) We are to keep the Sabbath Day holy
2) We are to labor six days- work is not evil, but limited.
3) We are not to allow those associated with us to work on the Sabbath
4) The reason in Deuteronomy given is that we would remember our slavery and not be slaves to our work.

Too many in our culture are slaves to this world, to their debt, to their work.  God seeks to not allow our work to become our god.  Some in hyper-productive-oriented America see this command as an evil thing.  But it is a gift to be able to step back from your work, and not let it control you. This also is a corporate command, not just an individual command.  That is because keeping the Sabbath is much easier when other people are keeping it too.

Prayer: God, thank you that you value our rest and rhythm in life.  Help my rhythm be as yours, for you are the giver of every moment, every hour.

12/25/10 Galatians 4:4 Christmas- the Last Sabbath in America

When the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law. (Galatians 4:4)
There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. (Hebrews 4:9)

Thoughts: Christmas is finally here- a day of peace, hope and love- and rest.  Rest from shopping, rest from the rush.  It's all done. Rest- even from the cell phone going off all the time.  Most things are closed today.  So I invite you to stop and listen.  If you're not hightailing it from one grandma to another... listen.  Most stores are closed.  Most are with their family, or are missing being with family.  Walmart is even closed.  Military maneuvers are limited to the bare necessities.  The malls went from being packed, angry places with huge lines to... hush.  It used to be like this all over America every Sunday- once a week.  Now Christmas is the last Sabbath. When you listen to songs about Christmas you get it- Silent night (Stille Nacht)- all is calm; The Little Town of Bethlehem is... still;

In the last twenty years, in the name of secularism we have eliminated our laws regarding the corporate Sabbath from our books.  This was the second major step of secularization after the eliminating of prayer from schools. Sunday in America is just like any other day- a busy day. Rascal Flats said, "Sunday was a day of rest- now it is one more day for progress."   It is not considered "the Lord's Day" (Rev. 1:10) but our day- to shop, or make money- or whatever.

Someone asked, "Can't we keep Christmas all year long?"  Keeping a Sabbath is a way to do just that.  Since we have eliminated Sabbath laws, what has happened?  Has our family situation improved?  Today the institution of marriage is in such shambles that for the first time in our history more are choosing to live together without getting married than choosing to marry.  We have become slaves to our work mostly because of rampant consumerism and debt (I owe, I owe so oft to work I go).  The Sabbath was given to help us remember we are not slaves to our work or to things (Dt. 5:15).  Our debt has skyrocketed, and the government seems to want to go to more debt to get us out of debt.  Many will be in a Christmas regret mode in about two weeks when the credit card bills come.  A study by Depaul & Ben Gurion Universities published 9/10 noted 3 changes in areas that eliminate the Sabbath laws: 1) church attendance decreases; 2) drug and alcohol abuse increase; 3) Unhappiness among women increases (17%).  A Sabbath is a way to restrain our lust for things and help us to focus on God, family, and merciful/helpful things. The shepherds left their sheep for a moment, perhaps our sheep will be okay in God's hands.  Keeping a Sabbath is a sign of faith and trust in God.

Galatians 4:4 says. "When the time had fully come."  Jesus not only intersected our space, He also intersected our time. Christmas is a day of peace and rest because the Prince of Peace comes. Listen to the peace of Christmas today- but more importantly rejoice that the Prince of Peace has come!  This is truly Joy to the World!

Prayer: Thank you Lord, for a day to catch our breath, renew friendships with family and old friends.  Thank you that you give us rest and peace within.

John Calvin abridged:  We do not need to speculate why God did not send His Son sooner.  The Son who was sent, must have existed before He was sent.  He was made under a woman- that is, he assumed our nature.  The Son who could have claimed every kind of exemption from the Law became subject to it in order to free us from it.  This does not mean we may do whatever we please- for the law is the everlasting rule of a good and holy life.  Yet we are free from the rigor of the Law.
