11/22/11 Messianic Prophecies about Jesus' Line

31 Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. (Isaiah 37:31)

1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD— 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.
10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. (Isaiah 11:1-3,10)

5 In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it— one from the house of David— one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness. (Is. 16:5).

1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob,    Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,  5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,    Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,  6 and Jesse the father of King David.
(Matthew 1:1-6)

Thoughts: The above passages have three readings from Isaiah and one about the fulfillment in Matthew.  The Isaiah passages point to the Messiah's coming when things looked bleak.  They narrow the identity of the Messiah- first to the believers, then to Judah, then to Jesse (who had eight sons), and then to David's descendants.  Matthew points out this fulfillment in his passage.
It is a little bit like how to pick the real Messiah out of the line up.  There is an elimination- non Judean; non- Jesse; non-Davidic.  Jesus came from a kingly line and we owe him our allegiance.

Prayer: May I be able to see you, Lord, and identify you in my living.
